This is the ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) page on information literacy: http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlissues/acrlinfolit/informationliteracy.cfm

It includes guidelines, standards, and other information.

Information literacy is a set of skills that all students need to possess in order to be successful researchers, scientists, critics, etc. I think that, due to a variety of factors, students pick up these skills in a piecemeal fashion. As librarians, I think that we have the ability and opportunity to educate students (and sometimes faculty) and fill in the gaps.

The information literacy skill that I think needs to be emphasized the most is evaluating information. At ISU, we use the CRAAP test. It covers all the bases, and it really sticks in people's heads: http://www.isu.edu/library/help/ineteval.htm

Hope this helps.
